Mem ist die, von Richard Dawkins 1976 entworfene bzw. geprägte hypothetische kleinste Einheit des Informationsaustauschs i.S.v. "Replikationseinheit der kulturellen Evolution" - und als solches ein Konzept und damit das Gegenstück zum "Gen" der Biologie. Beispiele für Meme (Informationseinheiten) können nach Dawkins sein: "Ideen, Texte, Gedanken, ein gesprochenes Wort, Noten, Schlagworte, Kleider, die Kunst, Keramiken herzustellen oder Formen zu bauen"; sie werden in der Regel durch Kommunikation weitergegeben. Die entsprechende Lehre dazu heißt Memetik (als Gegenstück zur Genetik).
